What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation looks to increase the breasts’ aesthetic appearance by adding breast implants beneath the chest muscles or the breast tissue. This procedure is massively popular worldwide, with almost 300,000 performed in the United States in 2019 alone. Dr. Widder has conducted breast augmentations for many decades and has continually provided his patients with incredible results.
Dr. Widder uses round, smooth (unlike anatomical or gummy bear implants), and moderate profile saline breast implants, a type that he has found to be by far the most beneficial to the patient. There is no malformation of breast shape if round breast implants move within the pocket, and they are also very safe to insert.
Benefits
When a plastic surgeon of Dr. Widder’s quality performs a breast augmentation procedure, the results can be life-changing. Some of the primary benefits include:
- More fullness, nice cleavage, nicer shape, and attractive projection in the breasts
- Balanced breast and hip proportionality and harmony
- More symmetrical breasts
- Elevated self-image, self-confidence, and sense of femininity.
Additionally, Dr. Widder values safety as his highest priority. As he frequently says, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This means that Dr. Widder will do everything he can to keep you safe during surgery and also avoid any revision surgeries down the road.
Candidate
Women who are healthy, in good medical condition, and do not smoke are generally good candidates for breast augmentation surgery. Most women who choose this surgery do so because they are not satisfied with their breasts’ size and shape.
It is important to note that women with drooping or sagging breasts may not be the best candidates for this surgery; unless they get a lift procedure at the same time.
Suitable breast augmentation candidates usually exhibit:
- disproportional breast size and body shape
- uneven breasts or asymmetry
- a loss of firmness or breast tissue due to genetics, childbirth, or weight loss
- a desire for larger breasts, nice cleavage, and fuller upper pole.
How Does Dr. Widder Perform Breast Augmentation?
Dr. Widder’s techniques have proven to deliver outstanding results time and again. The entire surgical process typically takes around two hours to complete and is performed under general anesthesia. Generally, the operation follows these stages:
Check-in and Anesthesia
When you arrive, we will briefly meet with you to answer any last-minute questions you may have. Dr. Widder will also draw on the surgery areas. You will begin the surgical process by getting an intravenous and transfer to the operating room at our beautiful surgical center, which has held accreditation by AAAASF for over 30 years. After our expert CRNA administers your anesthesia, Dr. Widder will start the procedure.
Incision and Implant Placement
First, Dr. Widder will create the incision under the areola. He typically uses a dual-plane technique, which essentially means that the implant will sit partially below the muscle and partially below the breast tissue. The upper portion of the implant will be placed underneath the pectoral muscle, while the lower part of the implant will be under the breast tissue. Since Dr. Widder uses saline implants, he can inflate the implant to the perfect size during the procedure.
Closing and Dressing the Incisions
Dr. Widder will complete the procedure by closing the incisions when he is sure that everything is in place safely. Lastly, a sterile surgical dressing will be applied on the wound. After the anesthesiologist extubates you, a return to the recovery room takes place. Our team will closely monitor you until you wake up.
Post Op Care
After you awaken from the procedure, you will return home in the company of a friend or family member. You will likely experience some pain and swelling for the first several days after surgery, but you can manage your discomfort with pain medications and following the post-surgical instructions that we will give you.
Patients should rest for several days. Most find that they can return to light duty work within about 3 – 5 days. We advise that you do not exercise for approximately 2 – 4 weeks to give the breasts adequate healing time. It takes about 3 – 4 months for the breasts to “drop” into their final position and for the swelling to dissipate, as well as a return of full breast sensation.
Dr. Widder will frequently check in with you throughout this process, making sure that you are comfortable and healing well. He will call you directly after surgery to make sure you are progressing properly. We will schedule follow-up appointments for the day after surgery, then see you again in the next 2-3 days, then a week, month, etc. You will always have a direct line to Dr. Widder and our staff to answer any questions.

FAQ
How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost in Northern Virginia?
Cost is important, but not the most important. The most essential factor is the quality of the breast implant surgeon, as this prevents safety issues and revisions. The cost will double if you will require a redo breast augmentation, so pick a high-quality surgeon like Dr. Widder to reach your goals the first time. Our team will discuss the cost and your surgery after your evaluation and surgery planning with Dr. Widder.
What are the Benefits of Saline Implants?
Saline breast implants are filled with saline solution during the surgery, which allows Dr. Widder to make more precise adjustments in real-time. Saline implants can be placed in the pocket through a small sub-areolar incision. This approach allows for the creation of nice cleavage. If saline implants rupture, your body will naturally absorb and process the liquid with virtually no risk of harm. Dr. Widder will gladly discuss how saline implants can benefit you during your consultation.
What Other Breast Surgeries are Offered?
In addition to breast augmentation, Dr. Widder also maintains expertise in redo breast augmentation, mini or full breast lifts, and breast reduction. Dr. Widder can help you decide which of these procedures will best address your unique concerns.
How Do You Choose the Best Implant Profile, Style, and Size for Me?
I use only smooth, round, and moderate profile breast implants made by Mentor. These are the best breast implants, and I have used them on thousands of patients.
How Should I Prepare for My Virtual Breast Augmentation Consultation?
Patients send me their front and side view pictures of their breasts, followed by phone call discussion about their desire and their circumference measurements in inches of their chest and breasts.
When Do I Need an Internal Bra or Galaflex for Breast Augmentation?
The only time that you need capsulorrhaphy (internal bra) is when the breast implant is displaced sideways or downward, or a unaboob occurs. Gallaflex is not used in my practice because I find it unnecessary, and it has significant complications, as I have seen on patients that got it from other surgeons.
Will I Have Cleavage After Breast Augmentation? Can My Breast be Placed Higher on My Chest?
Yes, you will have very nice cleavage due to my sub areola entry incision technique that allows for easy and safe dissection of the medial chest pectoral muscles. The height of the breasts on the chest is determined by the location of the breasts’ crease, so by elevation of the crease, the breasts will be positioned higher on the chest.
How Do I Know if I Will Need to Combine a Breast Lift with Implants?
If the nipples are droopy, you will need a breast lift procedure with the breast implants to obtain more youthful and attractive breasts. The lift procedure can be mini lift (donut, Benelli, circum areola), lollipop lift, or full lift (keyhole), according to the degree of droopiness and your desired look.
What is Breast Augmentation Recovery Like? When Can I Start Exercising?
You can return to light-duty work after 3-4 days and resume light activity in the gym after two weeks. Full activity without limitation is permitted after one month from surgery.
What is the “No-Touch Technique”?
This term and the Fennel technique are the same. I do not find it necessary as long as strict sterile techniques are maintained.
What Type of Breast Implant Looks and Feels the Most Natural?
Smooth, round, and moderate-profile implants made by Mentor are the best and most natural breast implants. It is a myth that silicone breast implants are more natural, as I replace many silicone gel implants with saline implants to the delight of my patients.
Will My Nipple Lose Sensation After Breast Implant Surgery?
Most of my patients maintain their nipple sensation since I place all my implants under the pectoral muscles. Due to anatomy or the use of excessively large implants, a small percentage of patients may lose sensation.
Will I Have Drains After Breast Augmentation?
Breasts augmentation is a drainless surgery.
How Long Will I Be Out of Work?
3-4 days for light-duty work and one month for strenuous work.
How Long Before I Can Exercise?
Light exercise — 2 weeks. Limitless exercise — one month.
What Are the Most Common Complications of Breast Augmentation?
In my practice, breast augmentation complications are very rare as long as patients follow my instructions. The most common complication is “capsule contracture” due to bleeding or not following implants displacement massage instructions.
How Do I Make Sure that I Get the Size that I Want?
The size of implants is determined by patients’ desire and circumference measurements in inches of chest and breasts.
Will There Be a Scar?
Since I place my scar at the lower border of the areola, which is very thin skin, the scar is almost imperceptible after 2-3 months.
Can an Implant Break? How Would I Know if it Did?
Breasts implant shells made of chains of silicone can break; however, my experience with Mentor’s company implants is excellent and rarely a deflation occurs. When it happens, one breast becomes noticeably smaller than the other side.
Can I Still Get Mammograms After Breast Implants Are Placed?
Yes. It is recommended every two years after age 40 and once a year after age 50.
My Breasts Feel Tight After Surgery. Will I Hurt Something If I Move?
As long as you move slowly and avoid abrupt and intense movement for one month after surgery, you will be ok.
Do I Need to Wear a Bra After Breast Augmentation?
It is recommended not to wear a bra during the daytime for one month or more after surgery, so the implants can “fluff” (settle down). A bra should be worn at bedtime for one month or more to avoid the sliding of implants under the arm pit.
Is This Operation Performed Under General Anesthesia?
Yes, in order to achieve an optimal outcome.
Does Someone Have to Stay with Me After Surgery?
Yes, for 24 hours, until the anesthesia effect wears off.
Will I Need My Breast Implants Replaced in the Future?
Only if the implants deflate or develop “Biofilm,” which requires replacement of implant with the removal of capsule. It is a myth that implants have to be replaced every ten years.
