Liposuction
Conveniently located to serve the areas of Vienna, Fairfax, McLean and Northern, VA
Excess accumulations of body fat are a source of deep insecurity for many patients. Getting rid of that last pocket of fat on the hips, midsection, or lower back can really seem impossible. When it comes to the ways your body stores fat in problem areas, many factors lie outside of your control. Things like age, genetics, and gender all play a role.
If you’ve gotten close to your target weight but can’t seem to lose those last pockets of fat from one or more areas of your body, it might be time to consider liposuction. Liposuction, or lipo, is a safe and effective cosmetic procedure used to remove pockets of excess fat cells to reveal your body’s ideal contours. When performed by an expert, liposuction is the best fat removal method.
Dr. Shlomo Widder, a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 30 years of experience, dedicates himself to helping his patients improve their lives through liposuction and other cosmetic procedures of the body, breast, and face.

What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction, also referred to as lipo or lipoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that eliminates stubborn fat deposits from the body. It’s not a substitute for healthy weight loss efforts, such as a well-balanced diet and exercise, and it’s not an effective obesity treatment. Liposuction procedures should be used by patients within about 20-30% of their ideal body weight and performed in targeted areas where there is no excessively loose skin.
Areas Treated
Some of the most common areas for liposuction include:
- Chin, neck, and cheek areas of the face
- Thighs
- Lower legs
- Buttocks

- Belly
- The back of the knees
- The area around your triceps and beneath your arms
- Lower back
Types of Liposuction
Several advanced liposuction technologies are available to give plastic surgeons varying tools and techniques.
The most prevalent types of liposuction include:
- Tumescent liposuction: Tumescent liposuction is the most common type of liposuction and likely the one most people are familiar with through TV and pop culture. During tumescent liposuction, a solution mix of lidocaine (to minimize discomfort) and epinephrine (to make the treatment area stiffen and blood vessels constrict) is injected. Once the mixture affects the treatment area, tiny incisions are made, and a cannula is inserted that removes the excess fat cells and the sterile fluid that was injected.
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL): This type of liposuction uses sonic energy to break down subcutaneous fat cells. A newer type of UAL is currently being used in some plastic surgery and dermatology practices called VASER-assisted liposuction.
- Power-assisted liposuction (PAL): This is a suitable type of liposuction to use if you’re trying to remove fat in small areas. During the procedure, the liposuction wand is rapidly moved around the treatment area to break up the fat and remove it. Often, it’s used on patients who have already had liposuction in the desired treatment area.
- Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL): During laser-assisted lipo, heat energy generated by concentrated beams of light is used to break down fat cells for easy removal. First, a light wand is inserted in an incision to “melt” fat, and then the fat is easily removed via a cannula.
During your liposuction consultation, you and Dr. Widder will discuss your options and decide which approach best aligns with your goals.
Benefits
Body contouring
The most apparent payoff of undergoing liposuction is that pockets of stubborn fat will be permanently eradicated. Thus, liposuction patients can expect to enjoy more contoured curves and a sleeker appearance. Dr. Widder’s extensive expertise also allows for the procedure to be done with minimal scarring, no inconsistencies, and very smooth results.
Starting a healthy lifestyle
Undergoing liposuction frequently prompts patients to start or maintain a healthier lifestyle to enhance their results. This can have long-term health benefits in many different ways, from lower blood pressure to less damage to your joints and back to sleeping better. Removing a pocket of fat that hangs around your belly, for example, can put a lot less stress on your neck, upper and lower back, and knees going forward.
Mental health benefits
In addition to the many potential physical health benefits, liposuction can also produce profound mental health benefits. Many of our returning patients mention experiencing a much better sense of self-confidence, more courage in choosing clothing and swimsuits, and better professional and personal opportunities.

What Happens During a Procedure?
Liposuction surgery is performed under some type of anesthesia. Depending on the treatment area and procedure, we will use IV sedation, local anesthesia, or general anesthesia. Once you have been safely sedated and brought back to an operating room, Dr. Widder and our team will employ your chosen method of liposuction. You will be free to return home after your liposuction procedure is finished and your incisions are closed.
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so depending on your unique circumstances, we will send you home in bandages or a compression garment. Dr. Widder will also prescribe medications to soothe any lingering discomfort. In some cases, we may use temporary surgical drains to reduce swelling and fluid retention.
There will be some swelling, tenderness, and fluid retention, but these will subside. Your results will gradually show over the next three weeks as your body heals, and it will take about 2-3 months for the final results to be apparent. Most people are able to resume non-strenuous work after a few days, and many can exercise regularly within about a month.
Candidate
People that are healthy, those in good medical condition, and do not smoke are typically good candidates.
Liposuction is best performed on those looking to change the appearance of their abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, and even neck.
The best candidates for liposuction are those who experience:
- Excess fat deposits that cannot be altered with diet and exercise.
- Disproportionate areas of the body.
- Good skin elasticity
Other Considerations
There are several variations on traditional liposuction, including:
- Tumescent liposuction
- Suction-assisted liposuction (SAL)
- Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL)
- VASER liposuction
- Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL)
