What Is a Butt Lift?
A butt lift, or gluteoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and fat to tighten and contour the buttocks after weight loss or the onset of aging. A patient’s skin elasticity, bone anatomy, and tissue structure are taken into account to build a treatment plan to rejuvenate, tighten, and lift the appearance of the patient’s butt.
During the procedure, small incisions are made along the upper waistline on the back, along the hips, in the groin area, or where the butt cheeks meet the thighs to remove lax skin tissue and pockets of accumulated fat cells. Fat removal and some level of body contouring are typically done through liposuction. It should also be noted that this procedure should not be confused with a Brazilian butt lift or butt augmentation, which are different procedures.
When Should I Consider a Buttock Lift in Northern Virginia?
The best time to consider a butt lift is:
- If you have loose, drooping skin in your buttocks
- If you recently experienced significant weight loss and are now close to your ideal weight
- If you feel self-conscious
- If the excess skin makes you uncomfortable or causes mobility problems

What’s the Difference Between a Butt Lift and a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A butt lift should not be confused with a butt augmentation or the similarly named Brazilian butt lift. A butt lift is not designed to increase volume, like a butt augmentation or a Brazilian butt lift are.
A butt augmentation will change the shape of the buttocks by using permanent silicone implants. A Brazilian butt lift is similar to a standard butt lift procedure, but it uses a fat graft (also called a fat transfer) to add volume to the patient’s butt cheeks.
Benefits
The aesthetic improvements from this procedure be a great source of self-confidence, and there are no limits to the number and types of doors self-confidence can open for a person. In addition to the less-visible mental health benefits, many patients use a butt lift procedure as inspiration to maintain or work on living a healthier lifestyle to emphasize their results. Losing excessive fat and skin around the buttocks and hips can also improve daily comfort and mobility issues.
Candidate
Patients who undergo butt lift surgery usually want:
- Excess skin on the buttocks removed
- The position of the butt skin elevated
What To Expect
A butt lift is an outpatient procedure typically performed under general anesthesia in our AAAASF-accredited surgical suite. Once you’re in a state of comfortable sedation, Dr. Widder will make incisions in areas above, around, or underneath the buttocks depending on your unique circumstances.
First, excess skin will be removed. Next, a liposuction cannula is inserted into the incisions to contour areas where pockets of fat have accumulated and made the buttocks appear “lumpy.” Dr. Widder will then close the incisions, making sure that the skin is pulled tightly to provide a newly lifted look.
When the surgery is completed and the incisions are closed, Dr. Widder will then apply dressings and a pressure garment to reduce excessive swelling and keep the surgical area compressed while you heal. Drains may be used to reduce the occurrence of excessive fluid buildup.
After your surgery, you:
- Will need to arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you for the first day.
- Will be prescribed an antibiotic and some pain medication.
- Must limit your movement and adjust your sleeping position for about a month after surgery.
- Will check in with Dr. Widder regularly to ensure you are healing well.
Although everyone’s experience with a butt lift is different, most patients’ average recovery time lasts about six weeks.
Dr. Widder’s Commitment to Patient Service & Safety
Many patients want to combine butt lift surgery with other plastic surgery procedures like a tummy tuck or mommy makeover. While plastic surgery practices will often try to schedule multiple operations concurrently to shorten the treatment timeline, doing so can be unsafe. Your body can’t appropriately use the resources and processes it needs to heal, and this can often lead to unwanted results and revision surgeries later on. If you’re having multiple procedures performed by Dr. Shlomo Widder, he will strategically space them out and only perform one at a time because your safety and results are his top priorities. Dr. Widder makes himself available to patients 24/7 after their butt lift surgery or any other cosmetic surgery. He checks in with patients each evening after surgery to make sure there are no concerns or safety issues that need addressing. If you’d like to see some of Dr. Widder’s work and actual patient results, be sure to browse his extensive catalog of before-and-after photos of cosmetic surgery. Widder Plastic Surgery is proud to be a bilingual practice and serves many Spanish-speaking, ESL patients in the Washington, D.C. metro area and beyond.
How Much Does a Butt Lift Cost?
Various factors may affect the bottom line for what you’ll pay for a butt lift include:
- Surgeon experience and skill
- Operating room fees
- Anesthesia
- Medications prescribed by the surgeon post-op
- Medical testing to ensure you’re a healthy candidate for surgery
Thus, it’s hard to predict your costs unless we first develop your unique plan. Our team will provide you with a detailed estimate after Dr. Widder assesses your concerns.
Other Considerations
Patients should not confuse this surgical procedure with a Brazilian butt lift and butt augmentation. These surgeries enhance the size and shape of the buttocks through fat transfers and implants. The plastic surgeon will explain the differences between the 3 butt surgeries and help you decide which is best for your needs and goals. Patients should also maintain a healthy and consistent weight and diet following their butt lift procedure. Weight gain or fluctuations can negatively affect the surgical results.
